Forensic Science Minor (Purdue)

Offered by: Forensic & Investigative Sciences Program The minor in Forensic and Investigative Sciences is designed for students who wish to learn the basic concepts of forensic science and how to apply them to other fields of knowledge.

The Forensic Science Minor requires a total of 18 credit hours: 

  • FIS 20500 Concepts of Forensic Science I (3 cr.)
  • FIS 20600 Concepts of Forensic Science II (3 cr.; FIS 20500 and 10101 or CHEM-C 101 or 105 prerequisites)
  • FIS 30500 Professional Issues in Forensic Science (3 cr.; FIS 20500 and 20600 prerequisites)
  • FIS 41500 Forensic Science and the Law (3 cr.; FIS 20500 and 20600 prerequisites)
  • FIS 10100 Investigating Forensic Science Lecture (1cr.)
  • FIS 10101 Investigating Forensic Science (2cr.)

Complete 3 credit hours from the following courses:

  • FIS 49600 Special Topics in Forensic Science (1cr. each--but students may take multiple topics)
  • FIS 43000 Population Genetics (3cr.; BIOL-K 322 and 323 and STAT 30100 prerequisites)
  • SPEA-J 303 Evidence (3 cr.; SPEA-J 101 prerequisite)
  • SPEA-J 320 Criminal Investigation (3 cr.; SPEA-J 101 prerequisite)

Note: Prerequisites to any of the minor courses are not included, but are required in order to complete the minor.

Residency Requirement

A minimum of 6 credits in the minor must be taken at the IUPUI campus. Correspondence courses may not be used to fulfill requirements for the minor.

Grade Policy

No grade below C is acceptable in the minor subject. No grade below a C- is accpetable for any course counting toward the minor.  A minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required to complete the minor.
