Graduate standing in physics or consent of instructor.

PHYS 60000 is designed to provide first-year physics graduate students with the mathematical background for subsequent studies of advanced mechanics, electrodynamics, and quantum theory. Topics include functions of a complex variable, ordinary and partial differential equations, eigenvalue problems, and orthogonal functions. Green’s functions, matrix theory, and tensor analysis in three and four dimensions.
